I made the mistake several years ago of buying enough quilt fabric for projects without immediately starting those projects. Oh, of course I had other projects to work, novels to write, work to go to, Important Stuff, but still... the fabric has languished in dusty closets. Toward the end of this summer, I pulled out my collection and started making ninepatches of these pretty pastel fat quarters.

It took a while of pondering before I decided whether to make them into something like a tote bag or a lap quilt, but in the end I went with tried and true. Counting quilts I've collaborated on with my mother, but not little projects like doll quilts or placemats, this is my sixteenth quilt... I think? Goodness!

Also, the end of summer makes everything look ratty in the garden. We grew onions, but kept watering them as their sprinklers are also for the grass, even though you're supposed to let them get dry. So they still have green tops. And they are small, like pearl onions. Oh well. We had some with sausage and mustard the other day and they were marvelous. Just not what I'd expected.

On the other side of the yard (you'll notice there's no grass here - we are expunging the foxtails from the face of the earth), our squash and cucumbers bit the dust. We put them out of their misery, but kept the tomatoes. Don't be fooled; only the cherry tomato on the end is actually producing anything. The two heirlooms have not earned their keep. We added something like four bags (soil, soil, amend, peat) to fill up the two raised beds where they'd mysteriously dropped in level.

And of course, we planted seeds! Lettuce, spinach, red swiss chard, radishes, and beets.

Things sprouted, put out teeny little leaves, and were mowed down by Secretive Grasshoppers en masse. We still have most of the radishes and the chard. Everything else is sort of decimated. Good thing I have more seeds!

In food news, we made cobb salad with homemade blue cheese dressing. I just searched blue cheese greek yogurt and it's amazing how the internet provides.
