Where to begin? The summer has slipped away, or I'd like to think it has. Children have gone back to school, discussions of holiday gatherings have begun, sweaters are being sorted for the new season, but it was 100 degrees outside yesterday and I keep skipping the farmer's market because it is TOO HOT on the asphalt.

Where have we been?

Cooking, cleaning, diapering, blendering baby food (it's ridiculously easy, why does anyone buy it in pricey little jars?). Reading picture books together. Reading the Hobbit together. Finishing the second draft of my latest novel. Scrivener has been helpful in allowing me to break the story down into parts.

Gardening, a little. I pop outside to water a few days a week, after the baby goes to sleep and before 9:00. After 9:00 watering is prohibited. Our Chinese elm in the backyard dropped not one but two branches a few weeks apart, each the size of a car. This has been a bad year for plants, and I don't just mean in our yard. The hills used to turn golden every summer. Now they are grey, withered and beyond dead, like bleached bone or driftwood or charcoal. Many of the trees, even the native oaks, didn't leaf all the way out to fill up their branches this year. The wisteria that flowered this spring withered and died overnight.

We are getting more sleep at night, for which I am grateful.

Taking it slow. Hoping to pick it up a bit. Onions and garlic from my parents' garden. These pictures are two months old. That's how long it's been since I got around to uploading anything from my camera.
