Nearly Halloween

Toast and jam in the morning, silvery light:

A most splendid weekday vice. Cherry jam on homemade wheatberry bread.
We had a visitor on the back fence, look!

Actually it was a family of four of them; the rest didn't wait for me to get my camera out, but he stuck around a little and made that funny noise they do.
I have discovered delicata squash. It was at Trader Joe's last year, but I didn't pay much attention then. This time I bought one, then actually read the little label and cooked it as directed (well, they season with salt and pepper. I recommend salt, garlic powder, and chili powder) and it was amazing. I love the little rainbow shapes it makes. And the fact that we can eat the rind so I don't have to scoop it out or peel it.
